Tipu Sultan Museum

The Tipu Sultan Museum lies within the portals of the Daria Daulat Palace, once his summer palace and later appropriated by Arthur Wellesley. Constmcted mainly in wood, the structure rests on a vast plinth. The walls and ceilings are elaborately painted. The murals on the outer walls depict scenes from Tipu's wars while the interior walls are ornately painted with abstract designs and floral motifs. An open verandah surrounds the central edifice and green blinds protect the murals from the elements.

The museum itself is up a steep flight of stairs, on the first floor. On display in the series of small chambers are sketches of Tipu, his father Haider Ah, his sons, his forts, Srirangapatna from different angles and Bangalore during the period. There are a number of maps of Tipu's forts and his dominions. There is also a display of coinage used during the reigns of Tipu and Haider Ali and medals awarded by Tipu.

Perhaps the most interesting alcove is the one with portraits and charcoal drawings of Tipu and his family. One poignant portrait depicts the discovery of the slain Tipu, while an engraving shows the dead Tipu surrounded by his family and friends. Other portraits include one of prince Tipu, his last stand at the battle of Srirangapatna and his two sons surrendering to General Baird. Another room contains photographs of Tipu's war helmets and cuirass and a mechanical toy tiger, the originals of which are in London's Victoria and Albert Museum. This small museum succeeds in encapsulating the short but brilliant reign of Tipu Sultan.
